How might we discover talents, nurture talents, and provide opportunities for those talents to be shared in the work of the church?
General Approach
• How do we connect when we are scared to share who we are? Do something you are good at – builds confidence
• let people know that training and mentoring is provided
• talk to people
• gift of time; honour their time
• allow people to work in areas their passions lay
• don’t assume that people want to volunteer in their former vocation
• make more visible our values and our appreciation of shared talents
• generally, we need to ask; personally approach the individual
• as emergencies/opportunities come up, people step up
• broaden youth groups / all age groups
• sponsorship/subsidy to nurture talents
• more open brainstorming opportunities
• comment box – to welcome ideas, and ideas to be included on/in media
Worship
• specialized groups as regular programming e.g. band, choir, acting/theatre
• allow time in workshop (worship?) to share talents
• coffee hour – question of the week
Talent and Skills Inventory
• skills audit; director of skills
• compile a file for future use
• be more selective about what skills we need
• church directory to include talents: grass cutting, painting, reading, visiting, social media whiz, small repairs, etc.
• questionnaire for talent: music, crafts, arts, tech
• survey of who has what talents
• define opportunities where a diverse range of talents are needed and communicate it
• inventory of talents (can we collect? survey?); church directory connection
• ask for commitment to and activity/interest
• questionnaire re: spiritual gifts and talents/abilities and plan to develop them
• questionnaire – categories on a list with checkboxes e.g., What’s your talent?
• send out a needs questionnaire, similar to Sunday School registry
• network within our church community and find out what people like to do / can help with
• register talents: ask people how they’d like to help. What kinds of things would you like to do / can you do to help us? What can we do to help support you? (needs to be mutual)
• offer skill courses, i.e., What is involved in positions and matching talent to positions
• post skills list rather than positions to be filled
Training and Support
• equip Nominations Committee with position descriptions, etc. (note: description of the mandate of each committee is provided to the Nominations Committee and there is a brochure available that highlights the different ways to be involved; this is also on the website)
• position descriptions
• develop a mentoring program for after folks receive orientation to various positions
• active listening – during coffee time do a structured activity; find out something about someone you didn’t know
Events
• ask a specialized group to attend and share talents e.g., singing group, acting troupe, etc.
• talent show
• speakers
• contact schools – bands, plays
• hosting on our premises: plays, fashion shows, teas, concerts
• use our land/space for public art
