DAY SIX – Tuesday, February 23, 2021

Exodus 20:1-17  “God builds a community”

Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work–you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
Honour your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Because God commanded Moses to bring the people out of bondage in Egypt, he gave Moses the Ten Commandments to keep the thousands of people from committing sin.

1. God insisted they have no other gods before him. He was to be worshipped only – other gods can be possessions, idols – anything to exclude him to being first in their lives.
2. No images of anything – angels, statues etc. Not to bow down to them or serve them. For he is a jealous god, must be worshipped – otherwise it will affect the children to the 3rd or 4th generation. Mercy will be given to those that love him and keep the commandments.
3. Taking the name of the Lord in vain is a great sin unto him.
4. Remembering the Sabbath day to keep it holy. People need time to rest, and to worship him. Today, sadly, people have no time to rest and spend time with God in worship and praise – most are busy working that day – can’t spend time with him and families can’t spend time together any day of the week.
5. Honouring your parents is crucial to God.
6. No killing – sadly this is happening more and more every day. Why isn’t life sacred? Love your neighbor.
7. Committing adultery is happening more every day.
8. Stealing anywhere, anything belonging to others.
9. Bearing false witness – gossiping
10. Covetness – why worry what other people have, be happy with what you do have.

It is hard to follow God’s commandments – but is what we should live by. To break one of the commandments in his eyes you have broken all the laws and have sinned. These were put in place to keep Gods people from committing a sin and live by. How sad that people today have broken God’s law.

Thanks goodness Jesus made a new covenant that we believe in him – as he spoke at his last supper with his disciples.
