Matthew 25: 1-13
This is one of the most popular parables of Jesus and is also known as the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins. This parable has been a popular subject for painting, music, sculpture and drama. What I interpret from this scripture is that one must be prepared for the Day of Judgement. Five of the virgins are wise and have brought oil for their lamps while five are foolish and have only brought their lamps. As a result, only the wise virgins were able to attend the wedding celebration as torchbearers. The others arrive too late after searching for lamp oil and they are excluded.
This parable indicates that the Lord’s coming will distinguish one group of people from another. The one group enters in with the Lord to enjoy fellowship with Him. The other group is kept out and will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
We all have to reflect on our own individual lives and prepare to be ready and stay alert for the second coming of Christ. None of us know the day or the hour. We must be ready when Jesus returns to this earth. We must examine ourselves and our connection with our faith.
