DAY THIRTY-ONE – Wednesday, April 6, 2022
Matthew 20:1-16
It’s not “fay-er”! Rev. Elaine quoted this at the beginning of one of her recent sermons. It struck a cord as we have all heard “It’s not fair” from children. Sometimes we still feel that way as we grow older. Indeed we have heard it about many of the issues with the pandemic.
The workers in the parable felt that way and you can see their point. “I’ve slaved all day in the boiling sun to get my pay and these late comers who turn up as we begin to pack up get the same pay? Not fair!”
The boss, however, doesn’t view it from their hours x wage calculations. He has the funds and he sees willing workers who haven’t found employment still trying at the end of the day. He chooses to share his wealth with them, too. To the criticism he says that things aren’t always black and white. Mathematical formulas do not take in the human dimension. They work on probability and exact calculation of pluses and minuses. They use only the intellect and not the heart.
Jesus is telling us that we are all welcome in His kingdom. His chosen will be included no matter when they are enfolded on His love. Inclusion is not dependent upon length of service but in willingness to follow Him. It is not a reward meted out in direct proportion to any contract. It is a gift of love.
It is fair if you use the love formula! Parents love all their children- first, last, and in between. Aren’t we blessed to have such a wise and wonderful God?!
