DAY TWENTY-TWO – Saturday, March 13, 2021

Mark 2:23-28

One sabbath he was going through the cornfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

This passage brought back some childhood memories and I hope you won’t mind if I share. Growing up on a farm I was witness to the long hours my parents worked every day. On Sunday there were always cows needing to be milked, eggs to gather and animals to feed. Now our country Church was about a four minute walk away and most every Sunday Mom, Dad and we kids went to Church and/or Sunday School. Then, in the earlier days, dad would often take us for afternoon visits with our relatives or go fishing in a trout stream, but as he grew older he spent his time off from Sunday chores resting. Now the feeling I got after studying this passage is about the wonderful love God has for us, that people are more important than anything else. He set aside a special day, the seventh day, the Sabbath, as a day of rest and worship. In summation I guess my family had it right.

Consider this: How do you spend your Sundays? How are they different than those of your childhood? Or are they?

Covid has certainly altered our routines, but we can still take time to feel God’s love through meditation, prayer or just being still...silent and listen.
