Thinking of serving on a committee at Port Perry United?
Here is what each committee does…
Christian Education
The Christian Education Committee is responsible for the Sunday school, the youth groups, and any Bible study or educational programs that are offered by our church. The Committee makes sure that each of these programs is supported, and that all the people of our church have an educational opportunity to develop and grow in faith. At present, the Committee is responsible for the role of Sunday school coordinator and actively seeks Sunday School teachers and organizes the curriculum for the Sunday School program. Special events like the Advent Event and Church Family Games Nights are all a part of the oversight and work of this dynamic committee. Monthly meetings are held on a Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the resource room.
Community Outreach Committee
The Community Outreach Committee promotes outreach locally, nationally and globally. Soup luncheons (Souper Sundaes!) and a Golf Tournament help raise funds to support Northhouse, North Durham Big Brothers and Sisters, Durham Youth Housing and North Durham Community Care. Meetings are typically held Sunday afternoons.
Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee looks after how we connect with those who are curious about our congregation and engages the entire congregation in creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. It is responsible for setting up the lists of friendship elders, greeters, and coffee hosts. It looks after the cards that are in the pews for new people. And it looks after sending out cards to those who have been bereaved, baptized, or married during the last year. The committee conducts a training session once a year for greeters, ushers and friendship hosts. The Committee meets 3 to 4 times annually, typically on a weekday morning.
Nominating Committee
This is the committee that approaches people to ask them to serve their church and live out their discipleship by serving on a committee or in another church position. The committee is comprised of 4 members-at-large of the congregation, all serving a two-year term. Meetings begin in November and continue into January (usually 3 or 4 in total) and are often held after Sunday morning worship. A comfort with asking people to serve and a passion for your church and all its varied ministries is important for this group.
Pastoral Care
The mission of the committee is to encourage the congregation to grow and to flourish as a caring family by providing general oversight and nurture for the pastoral care of the congregation. The committee has a special concern for shut-ins. Some committee members volunteer at monthly “Chaplain Chats” at Port Perry Place and The Villa. The committee organizes a weekday afternoon service in June for shut-ins and a Comfort at Christmas service in December. And it keeps in regular contact with all members through facilitating the “collar” program. This caring group is great for people who have a special heart for listening and staying connected with our members. Meetings are typically held on a Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the resource room, about 4 times a year.
Stewardship Committee
This committee has two main responsibilities: overseeing the finances of the congregation and care and maintenance of the church building and property. Fundraising is also a key component of the work of this committee. The support and nurture of the Mission and Service Fund is a part of this committee’s mandate as well. Members of the Stewardship Committee are invited to help count the offering on Sunday mornings. There is a property sub-committee to give special attention to our building and supervision and support of our custodians. The Stewardship committee runs the annual auction, hosts a yard sale and heads the annual Anniversary dinner. The Auction is the major yearly fundraising for the congregation, so it is truly an “all hands-on deck” affair. In order to maintain careful oversight of the church finances as well as to ensure our building remains in excellent repair, the Stewardship Committee meets monthly, typically on the second Sunday of the month before Sunday service at 8:15 a.m. This hard working group is also a fun group and is great for hands-on people.
Worship Committee
The Worship committee provides general oversight of the congregation's worship experience and oversees the use of the sanctuary. This committee prepares for special services, including communion, baptism, and reception of new members. The committee receives feedback on worship and works with the ministers, organist, and choir director to provide a meaningful worship experience for all in attendance. Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in September, November, January, March and May.
Terms of Service
Except for the nominating committee (please see above) all terms on a committee are for 3 years. After 3 years you will be asked if you would like to renew for another 3 years. After 6 years all committee members are required to take a one year hiatus before serving on another committee.
Youth
Youth are welcome to serve on committees. The typical three year term can be waived to accommodate school commitments.
(please contact the church office if any of these committees spark your interest or if you have a question, concern or idea!!)
