NEW SUMMER WEDNESDAY WORSHIP

We are offering a Wednesday evening outdoor worship service for both churches during the month of August at Prince Albert United. Bring a lawn chair & gather on the lawn at 7 p.m. This short casual service will conclude in about ½ an hour with lemonade on the lawn to follow. This is a perfect service for cottagers and vacationers who often miss our summer Sunday worship. Children are very welcome. Come worship in the fresh air.

A GIFT FROM REV. NANCY!

Nancy has given both churches a subscription to “Children’s’ Worship Bulletins”. These are children’s activities for each Sunday with Bible activities, colouring and games. These are sent electronically to the church office each week and will be available for children to use during worship or take home each week. They will be placed on the front pews. We extend our thanks to Nancy for her generosity and her support of our young people.

A NOTE FROM PRESBYTERY

The June Presbytery meeting saw the installation of officers for the up coming year. After this two presentations took place. The first by Glenn Brown on the Footprints program which provides respite for families with children 13 years of age and under who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The program is geared towards recreation rather than therapy for the children. Respite time allows parents to pay extra attention to their other children, or spend some time together, run errands, or have some down time. To learn more see their web site at www.footprints4autism.org The second presentation was by Beth Lettner on the role of the Parish Nurse. A Parish Nurse is a registered nurse who supports and directs parishioners to the most appropriate care providers. While assisting the parishioner to achieve an optimum level of functioning by promoting the connection between health and faith. Anyone interested in becoming a Parish Nurse can view their web site at www.ichm.on.ca

PORT PERRY U.C – CLEAN UP BEGINS!

Anyone who is interested in helping to clean in the auditorium the weekend of July 4th and 5th is asked to contact Vern Reynolds at 905-985-9858. We ask you, if possible, to bring pails, sponges, cleaning rags etc. It is planned to wash the walls, floor and all furniture to try to eliminate the “construction” dust. If we all work together this job will go more quickly and easily.

PRINCE ALBERT TALENT AUCTION

Our Talent Auction for this year will be held on Friday, November 21st. We ask you to be thinking about your donation to this year’s fundraising event. Watch this newsletter in the fall for more details. We thank you for your anticipated support of this major fundraiser.

CENTRAL TREASURER NEEDED

Pursuant to the announcement at the Annual Meetings earlier this year, our current Central Treasurer, Grant Laird, will be retiring from this position in September.
We are currently looking for a volunteer to take over this position. The job has been made much easier by our new central payroll system. Payroll is now handled outside the church and not by the Central Treasurer.
If you are interested in learning more about what the position entails, contact Pat in the church office (905-985-2801) or Grant (905-985-9283). To ensure that the transition goes smoothly Grant is ready and willing to work with his successor

PRINCE ALBERT SUMMER CLOSING

Prince Albert U.C. will be closed the Sundays in July and August. Re-opening Sunday, September 7th.

PRAYER PATIO

The Port Perry Pastoral Care Committee invites you to be part of a Prayer Patio. We envision this being on the east lawn of Port Perry United under the maple tree – a place for lemonade on the lawn or to rest and be still. If you would like to be part of this project, please purchase a round patio stone, and if you would like it to be placed in memory of someone let us know. There will be a book with the names listed, please do not engrave the stone. A bench or two would also be a welcome addition. For further information, please contact the church office 905-985-2801.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

A Joint Congregational meeting will be held immediately following the service in the Port Perry church sanctuary on Sunday, July 6th. This meeting has been called to discuss and review a recommendation from the Joint Needs Assessment Committee regarding our change in Pastoral Relations. It will be chaired by a Presbytery representative from Oshawa Presbytery Pastoral Relations Committee.
At this meeting also we will be forming our Joint Search Committee who, when Presbytery has officially declared a vacancy, will be searching for our new half-time minister. Members of the Joint Search Committee must be members of either Port Perry or Prince Albert United and must also be present at the meeting or have submitted a signed letter expressing their interest in serving on this committee. Letters may be submitted through the church office.
We encourage everyone to attend this important meeting.

ELEVATOR UPDATE

Isn’t it exciting? Every time you come to the church something else has been changed or added. Pretty soon, the contractor will be packing up his gear and heading to a new job. By the end of June the basic construction will have been completed and we will begin our wait for the elevator to arrive. We expect that workers will be back during late July/early August to do the installation of the elevator, and by Labour Day, the job should be wrapped up.
Financially, things have been moving with great speed as well. Many pledges have been honoured; we’ve had successful fundraisers, and, the Ontario Trillium Foundation funding has been received.
To date, approximately $271,500 has been received and more than $73,000 has been spent. More payments must be made to the contractor this month, and thereafter, payments will be made to purchase the elevator and install it.
At this time about $12,700 in pledges is still outstanding. In order to meet our obligations we will need to receive this money by the end of September. As such, if you still have an outstanding pledge, please send in your cheque as soon as possible. If you anticipate any problem with honouring your pledge prior to the end of September, please contact Pat in the office and let her know.
The Elevator Committee thanks you!

SUMMER UPDATES

The last weekly newsletter until the fall will be Sunday, June 29th. Any announcements or news over the summer months will be delivered verbally on Sunday mornings in Port Perry and/or placed on the church web site. www.portperryunited.com If needed we will use our e-mail system as well so if we do not have your e-mail and you would like to be included on our list please send your e-mail address to Pat at portunited@bellnet.ca
The weekly newsletter will begin again on Sunday, September 7th.

PORT PERRY FALL AUCTION

Not to rush the summer of course, but our Fall Auction will be upon us before we know it! It is scheduled for November 15th.
There will be some changes to the format of the auction this year. There will still be a “silent” and “live” portion and our emphasis will be on a “FUNraiser”. A committee is already at work on the new format. An emphasis will be on “talents and crafts” this year but as usual, we will still be accepting new items as well. We respectfully ask that no used appliances, exercise equipment, electronics, etc. be submitted. The committee has put a limit of 5 items per person this year and the committee will make the final decision as to what is accepted for the auction or what would be better served at another fundraiser. This year we will be asking that the donor designate their item “Silent” or “Live”. We will also be asking all donors who wish a tax receipt to place a fair market value on their item by indicating this amount on the donation sheet and signing to verify this amount for the Canada Revenue Agency.
We invite you over the summer to be thinking about what you would like to donate to this important fundraiser. If you already have an item to donate we would appreciate early submissions so that we can set up a preview table to be on display at our “Celebration of Elevation” dinner on September 20th. (see item below). The Auction Committee thanks you for your anticipated support. We look forward to a FUNraising event and time of fellowship.

PORT PERRY
“CELEBRATION OF ELEVATION”

The Stewards are planning a “Celebration of Elevation” Dinner on Saturday, September 20th. It is anticipated that this will be in conjunction with our official opening of the new elevator. There will be a limited number of tickets sold so watch for more news in the early fall. We are excited to host this evening that is now truly open to ALL. With our full accessibility we are very pleased to welcome members of our church family and members of our community who have not been able to attend our downstairs functions due to limited access. WELCOME ONE AND ALL!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Community Outreach has made a donation to the YWCA Durham which is providing second stage housing to women who have been victims of abuse. This program provides women with a safe supportive environment that promotes self sufficiency and independence. It provides the availability of Life Skills, Job Skills and a Mentoring program. The women must also volunteer in the project as a criteria for entrance into this program. They can assist in the kitchen, the garden, by cleaning or working in the front office. Wendy Leeder who is the Co-Executive Director sent a letter of thanks as there is very little housing available in Durham and this has helped many women by SAFE. Thank you all who continue to support Outreach. We all help to celebrate the fact that all of God’s creatures are valuable.

PRINCE ALBERT THANK YOU!

We thank everyone who participated in the fundraising venture with Otter’s Greenhouse. The fundraising is now complete and we received a cheque from Otter’s for $550! This is up almost $100 from last year. Thank you everyone for supporting both Otters and Prince Albert United Church.
