We previously informed you of the exciting news that Mr. John O’Toole; Durham
Region MPP announced that the Ontario Trillium Foundation approved our grant
application for $150,000 towards the elevator project.
Together with the funds raised by our congregation, we were able to proceed with
renovations for an elevator shaft and purchase of the elevator. Included with
this update are pictures and media coverage of the ceremonial ground breaking
event attended by Mr. John O’Toole, our mayor Marilyn Pearce, our Councilor,
Bobbie Drew, Morris Tait of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, John Gerrits of
Gerr Construction, our Minister Rev. Elaine Sveet and myself.
We are very pleased to report that construction is well underway. While the
activity is readily evident as you drive by the Simcoe Street West entrance, we
have listed below the various phases of construction that are complete and
currently in progress.
• relocation of offices within the building to free up space for the elevator
shaft
• removal of part of the former wooden ramp to free up space for the new ramp
• construction of the new heated, cement ramp for wheelchair access
• construction of the new cement stairs from the sidewalk to the entrance
• construction of the weather proof vestibule at the Simcoe Street entrance
• modifications to the exterior walls for entry to the elevator lobby
• construction of the interior elevator shaft and an individual entrance/exit
lobby
for each of the four levels in the church
• modifications to the lower hall and stairs leading to the interior auditorium
• installation of fire guard doors to ensure safety of occupants in the event of
a fire.
We expect to complete the majority of the general contractors work by the end of
June
and follow that phase of the project with delivery and installation of the
elevator during July/August. Upon completion of the installation, testing and
inspection approvals for the elevator service, we shall arrange the official
ribbon cutting ceremonies in Septemer.
Thanks again for your support to this project. Your financial donations towards
the project may be mailed to Port Perry United Church, 294 Queen Street, Port
